So many things are a work in progress.

Kids. Laundry. A bad haircut. Defining my abdominals.  My glass of wine.

I really need to work on a new mind set.  Everything is a work in progress.  The kids are always growing and changing.  The laundry is always growing.  My abs are a far cry from where they were a year ago, but I surely have room to improve.  If I stop trying to finish things and keep working on viewing things as a progression, a constant evolution then I might find more satisfaction in my day.  I desperately want to feel satisfied with my day, with my job.  Some days it is easier than others.  Some says everything sucks, and I feel like a failure.  I feel like I accomplish nothing some days.  Not one single task is completed.  But... If I look at it in a different light I can see so much accomplishment.  I might not have fed the kids a gourmet meal, but they were fed. The laundry might still be in the baskets waiting to be folded, but it is clean.  I might not have taught the children origami or made paper machie' dragons with them, but we did play.  Homework was done, books were read, songs were sung. And tomorrow when I get up to start it all over again I am sure my level of frustration will rise and fall throughout the day and my ears will grow weary with constant questions and needs. But I'll get through the day and look back and see that there was good in my day.

As for the glass of wine, I can certainly finish that.

Happy Birthday

My birthday was good.  There were a couple moments where I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it the way I had hoped for but it all turned out well in the end.  There were decorations put up by a very sweet 10 year old in the house. There was untold torment unleashed on me by the males under 6 in the household. (I was really ready to sell them.) I was surprised with new earrings and a bracelet by the folks I live with and a yummy dessert pizza from a gracious neighbor. After my celebratory shot of tequila, Alan and I made a run to TJMaxx so I could decompress after the boy insanity of the day.  I lucked into a really fun pair of shoes that made my day.

Friday was an amazing day... after all the children were dropped off at school and preschool. I went for a whirlwind shopping spree in search of something to match my new shoes. Yes, I am that silly but I ended up with a really fun birthday outfit.  :) I was overwhelmed with the racks and racks of clothing at the first place I went.  I hit the next place and when they asked if they could help me I grabbed hold of them by their ankles and wouldn't let go.  I begged them to dress me. I asked for age appropriate hottie.  I do believe I got it.  I felt great.

Next on the agenda was spa time! I didn't wait around for someone to put this little package together for me. I did it all by myself, just like a big girl.  I had a lovely massage, body polish (fancy words for sugar scrub all that itchy winter skin off), and a pedicure.  And while the fun we had next was super, I think I will plan on pajamas, takeout, and a movie at home after a spa day. I was a noodle after. It took a bit of work to pull it together to get ready for a night out on the town.

We had an amazing meal, but I better not have to wait until next year to repeat it.  Birthday dessert was had and then we were on our way to dance off those crazy calories.  I danced and danced and danced.  I was sweaty and exhausted and totally loved every minute of it.  I am pretty sure my friends thought I was crazy.  Thanks for great food, super friends, and cute shoes in which to dance the night away.   :)

And We Cooked!

Yesterday evening I did something I don't normally do. I cooked! Yes, I realize this sounds pretty silly, but I typically avoid the kitchen at all costs. My family survives on macaroni and the one thing I bake...cookies. Now mind you, over the years I have attempted various culinary feats but alas...it normally ends up with me frustrated and disappointed and my family starving or worse. So when I stumbled across the blog of a woman that loves to cook, seems to be really good at it, and has a family that adores her cooking I figured I'd give it one last go.  I made something I have never made before. I decided to make a lasagna and I used this recipe.

I went all out and made this bread for our side and even made a salad. We call it the pasta house salad. It has yummy artichokes in it. And the dressing is just red wine vinegar and olive oil.

The kids went nutso. Maybe because I cooked? Maybe because it was indeed edible and dare I say... yummy?

It was easier than I expected. I will certainly make it again. And now I don't have to cook the rest of the weekend because there are plenty of leftovers and Alan will grill at least once. Hallelujah!

Rian was my prep cook. An 8 year old is indeed pretty handy in the kitchen.

Beef! I will need to investigate some lower fat healthier versions. Might not be as tasty, but the heart palpitations should be less then, eh?

I also need to investigate buying the cheeses and meats in bulk now that I know the family appreciates this meal. Otherwise, why not the dollar menu then?

Now, I just need to find someone to clean up the kitchen for me and I'll be all set!

Beautiful Weather

Here in the Great Northwest the weather is pretty interesting in the spring. You can have snow one day and blazing sun the next. This past week has been one of the longest stretches of super weather since the winter thaw.  We have been outside constantly. The garage needs cleaning, the flower beds need cleaning, the kids need to run and stretch and play. Their dad also recently built them a new playset so they have really been testing it out. In the meantime, I have had a few text messages and missed phone calls from various family members and friends wondering if I am alright. By golly, you betcha!  We are outside and just soaking up sun!

A favorite song

Who out there doesn't like Coldplay? This is one that I remember playing while I was in labor with Jack. He is almost one! Maybe I'll share the soundtrack on his birthday. :)

Enjoy!
